The city of Guwahati witnessed a significant change as the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) was demolished on Monday. This decisive action, led by city officials, aims to clear the Silsako Beel lake from all obstructions, addressing the persistent flooding issues affecting the state capital.
Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah emphasized the urgency of this move, acknowledging the institute's contribution to education while underscoring the greater need to protect Guwahati from devastating floods. IHM will relocate to a temporary site on GS Road, with plans for a new facility on 30 bighas in Sonapur.
This major development is part of a broader campaign to establish an 800-bigha reservoir for urban flood management. Following the removal of IHM, the government also intends to evict other establishments like a tennis court and Ginger hotel, ensuring complete site clearance during the dry season.
