The Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has embarked on a determined mission to clear unauthorized street vendors and makeshift stalls in Assam's Barak Valley, officials confirmed on Wednesday. This initiative aims to reclaim public spaces overrun by congestion and restore order in the bustling town.
Enforcement personnel, alongside municipal and police officials, took to the streets early, using loudspeakers to urge vendors to vacate voluntarily. The eviction drive, reaching from Sadarghat Road to the SMC office, aims to free footpaths and carriageways for safe pedestrian and vehicular movement.
The SMC stresses that this operation is part of a strategic urban management plan and sees public convenience and safety as paramount. The civic body is working on identifying proper vending zones to avoid obstruction issues, signaling ongoing monitoring to prevent re-encroachment in cleared areas.
