The Maharashtra government has introduced a third zone within the Navi Mumbai police commissionerate, increasing the number of areas under deputy commissioners to three. This change, announced on Thursday, follows a proposal from the state's director general of police.

Previously, the Navi Mumbai commissionerate comprised two zones—Vashi and Panvel, each managed by Deputy Commissioners of Police. The new zone will be supported by two assistant commissioners of police to handle the burgeoning population and urbanization demands of the city, spread over 688 square kilometers with a populace of 58 lakh.

In anticipation of the Navi Mumbai international airport's expected operation later this year, preparations are underway to establish an airport police station. This facility will become functional shortly, overseeing security and law enforcement pertaining to the airport.
