Northern China's city of Baoding is experiencing devastating storms leading to nearly a year's rainfall in under a day. Over 19,000 residents have been evacuated as the city grapples with extraordinary precipitation levels, part of a broader pattern of extreme weather attributed to climate change and affecting China's economy.

Storms have unleashed nearly an entire year's worth of rainfall on Baoding, northern China, displacing over 19,000 residents, the national weather service reported on Friday. In the city's western part, Yi, rainfall totaled 447.4 mm in just 24 hours, shattering records across Hebei province.
Historically, Baoding has seen more than 500 mm of annual rainfall, but this recent downpour neared that yearly total in a single day. The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) publicized the evacuation of 19,453 individuals, yet details on relocation efforts remain scarce.
The CMA likened the deluge to the notorious Typhoon Doksuri, which inundated Beijing in 2023. As extreme weather patterns persist, attributed to the East Asian monsoon and climate change, China's aged flood defenses face mounting pressure as they safeguard its vast agricultural sector and population.
