The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to establish a weather station in Tura, Meghalaya's Garo Hills region, meeting the demand for localized forecasts, an official revealed on Monday.
Positioned in Dakopgre, across from the PA Sangma Stadium, this facility is poised to enhance weather forecasting, early warning systems, and climate monitoring in the state's western territory. A joint site inspection was conducted by IMD-Shillong, CPWD-Tura, and the Revenue Office of the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, highlighting the strategic significance of the location.
Although groundwork is required, especially regarding civil and electrical infrastructure, the station is crucial for bridging gaps in regional weather data and forecasting, with potential benefits for agriculture, disaster management, and public safety through timely alerts.
