Revolutionizing the Industry: Green Steel Certification Gains Traction

A total of 39 iron and steel producers have sought green steel certificates for emission reductions. The certificates are part of a government initiative that defines green steel taxonomy based on CO2 emissions during production. As many as 39 iron and steel producers have sought green steel certificates, aiming to significantly cut emissions, according to information presented in Parliament on Tuesday. The government introduced a standardized taxonomy for green steel in December 2024, assessing its status based on carbon dioxide emissions during production.

In a statement to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma revealed that participation in this initiative is growing, as 39 producers have already applied for the certifications. The system allocates certificates to plants that meet specific emission intensity levels outlined by the green steel taxonomy.

The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST), operating under the Ministry of Steel, is the designated agency for managing measurement, reporting, and verification processes. NISST will also issue the green steel certificates and corresponding star ratings, ranging from 3 to 5 stars, based on emission levels per tonne of finished steel.
