Punjab Enhances Flood Preparedness: A Comprehensive Strategy

Punjab's Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal has assured the public of the state's readiness to deal with potential floods, following heavy rains in several parts of the region. The department has completed significant groundwork, cleaning the state's drainage systems and reinforcing embankments to stave off flood threats.
Key projects such as river revetment, studs installation, and desilting conducted at a total cost of Rs 276 crore, aim to fortify the state's infrastructure across vulnerable areas. In an innovative approach, 600 check dams have been completed, with an additional 1,104 underway. Other measures include constructing 3,905 soak pits, planting over 53,400 bamboo saplings, and cultivating 226 kilometers of vetiver grass for erosion control.
Drain cleaning initiatives saw 4,766 kilometers of drains cleared, resulting in substantial cost savings by using departmental resources. The department has also prepared 8.76 lakh sandbags, optimized for emergency response using GIS technology. Water levels in major dams across Punjab remain within safe limits, with the department poised to react swiftly to any emergent threats.
