Tsunami Alert Issued for Marquesas Islands after Kamchatka Quake

Local authorities in French Polynesia have issued a tsunami warning for the Marquesas Islands archipelago, as waves ranging from 1.10 to 2.20 meters are expected to strike overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The alert comes in the wake of a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. Residents are being urged to relocate to higher ground and adhere to official safety instructions, which include securing or relocating boats.

Authorities noted that other archipelagos in French Polynesia could experience waves less than 30 centimeters high, which do not necessitate evacuation or sheltering. French Polynesia, covering 4,200 square kilometers of the Pacific Ocean, consists of 118 islands divided into five archipelagos.
