Germany's esteemed biathlete, Laura Dahlmeier, has suffered severe injuries following a rockfall in northern Pakistan during a climbing expedition. The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 5,700 meters on Laila Peak in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, as confirmed by provincial spokesperson Faizullah Faraq.
Rescue operations, supported by the Pakistan army, are ongoing, hindered by poor weather conditions that prevented helicopter access. Dahlmeier, 31, was ascending the peak alongside fellow climber Marina Eva Krauss when the rockfall occurred, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Retired since 2019 after an illustrious career, Dahlmeier's current condition remains serious. ZDF broadcaster reported no signs of life from helicopter surveillance, amidst seasonal monsoon rains causing heavy flooding and landslides in the region.
