Tragic Loss on Laila Peak: Laura Dahlmeier's Final Ascent

Tragedy struck the mountaineering world as former German biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier lost her life in an accident on Laila Peak, Pakistan, confirmed by her management on Wednesday.

The incident took place around noon on Monday at an altitude of 5,700 meters, detailed the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Dahlmeier was scaling the peak with her climbing partner when she was caught in a sudden rockfall within the Hushe Valley. Adverse weather conditions thwarted rescue helicopter efforts to reach the scene.

The 31-year-old, who retired from professional biathlon in 2019, made history by becoming the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit events in a single Olympic Games.
