In a stride towards sustainability, Karnataka successfully collected 32.69 lakh litres of used cooking oil during the financial years 2024-25 and 2025-26, directing it to biodiesel production facilities as part of the FSSAI's RUCO initiative.

Speaking in a video conference chaired by the Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration in Bengaluru, it was revealed that enhanced measures are necessary for collecting used oil and ensuring its conversion to biodiesel. Business owners, particularly from hotels and bakeries, received strict warnings against reusing oil, emphasizing the importance of handing it over to RUCO agencies.

Officials highlighted the need for regular testing of oils and adherence to FSSAI norms, including the sale of only fortified edible oils. The aim is to promote the use of healthier, low trans-fat cooking oils, while aligning with standards for hygiene, packaging, and labelling.
