India has made significant strides in expanding its green cover, planting trees over 93.7 lakh hectares in the past five years, the Centre announced on Thursday. Major contributors such as Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Gujarat have spearheaded efforts under various afforestation initiatives.
Minister of State for Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, revealed in Rajya Sabha that the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, launched on June 5, 2024, is pivotal to these efforts. The campaign fosters a 'Whole of Government' and 'Whole of Society' approach, urging voluntary plantation to boost green cover.
Existing schemes like the National Mission for Green India, Nagar Van Yojana, MISHTI, and CAMPA complement state-funded programs, enhancing afforestation without introducing new schemes. A comprehensive review indicates a significant increase in India's forest and tree cover over the past few years.
