Texas Mayor Urges Action for Life-Saving Flood Warning System
In response to deadly flash floods, Kerrville's Mayor Joe Herring pushes for a flood warning system with state lawmakers' support. Despite the urgency, some local officials question its efficacy. Hearings and a legislative session seek solutions amid resident concerns and past cutbacks in weather services.

In the aftermath of devastating flash floods that claimed over 130 lives, the Mayor of Kerrville, Texas, is appealing to state lawmakers for assistance in establishing a flood warning system within the year. The plea was made during a joint Senate-House committee meeting in his town northwest of San Antonio.
Mayor Joe Herring stressed the urgency of such a system to protect lives, emphasizing the need for legislative support to achieve this goal. The recent flooding, which saw a surge of water cascade down the Guadalupe River, was a focal point of a special legislative session convened by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Despite the drive for a solution, local law enforcement expressed skepticism. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha questioned whether a warning system could have made a difference given the rapid onset of flooding. Nevertheless, the Speaker of the House assured that efforts to address these issues would continue.
