The government announced on Friday that it has designated seven prestigious institutes, including four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), as Centres of Excellence under the National Critical Mineral Mission.
The decision was sanctioned following the approval from the Project Approval and Advisory Committee on Thursday. These centres will spearhead innovative research to enhance the nation's capabilities in science and technology related to critical minerals.
Critical raw materials provide vital support to sectors such as clean energy, mobility transition, and strategic industries like electronics, defense, and space. The named institutes include IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, and IIT Roorkee, joining efforts in a hub-and-spoke model to leverage their combined strengths.
