In a heartrending incident, a baby girl, merely months old, succumbed after reportedly falling from a bed into stagnant water inside her inundated home in Birati, officials revealed on Saturday.
Locals mentioned that the infant was unattended as her mother was occupied with cooking in another section of their residence located in the Devinagar area under North Dum Dum municipality's ward No. 13. Upon her return, the mother discovered the child unresponsive in the accumulated rainwater flooding the house due to persistent waterlogging. Authorities suspect the infant tumbled from the bed while she was playing.
The child was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility, but tragically, she was pronounced dead on arrival. Meanwhile, the local councillor attributed the severe waterlogging to ongoing infrastructure projects coupled with relentless rainfall experienced in recent days, which has submerged numerous houses in the vicinity. An investigation is actively underway, although preliminary indications suggest it was an unfortunate accident.
