Maharashtra's Environment Minister Pankaja Munde has called for surprise inspections at sewage treatment plants across the state, echoing the method of 'raids' conducted by the Enforcement Directorate. Speaking at a meeting in Nashik with industrialists and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board officials, Munde stressed the need for strict adherence to environmental norms.
Munde emphasized the necessity of balancing industrial growth and environmental protection amid a global crisis. She pointed out that only 48% of used water is currently treated while 52% goes to waste, urging industries to take responsibility. Initiatives like the Namami Gange program were cited as important steps toward addressing water treatment challenges.
Highlighting the significance of clean water for religious events like the upcoming Kumbh Mela, Munde recalled experiences from her previous ministerial tenure and advocated for sustainable cleanliness solutions. She called for collaboration with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on pollution control projects, suggesting that industries bear part of the financial burden for environmental efforts.
