At least 54 migrants have died after a boat, carrying approximately 150 people, capsized amid adverse weather conditions off Yemen's coast on Sunday, according to health officials.

The boat overturned near the Ahwar district in Yemen's Abyan province along the Arabian Sea, security sources confirmed. Abdul Qadir Bajameel, a provincial health official, reported that out of roughly 150 passengers, only 10 were rescued—nine Ethiopians and one Yemeni—while many remained missing. Rescuers are still scouring for survivors, two medics stated.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) notes a continuous surge in irregular migrants arriving from Africa, with many traversing the Bab al-Mandab strait annually on fragile vessels hoping to seek work in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations. IOM calls this route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen as "one of the world's busiest and most perilous mixed migration routes," recording more than 60,000 arrivals last year.
