Taiwan is grappling with the aftermath of an extraordinary week of rainfall that exceeded annual averages, resulting in widespread flooding and landslides in the south. Over 5,900 residents have been evacuated, with four fatalities reported and three individuals still missing. Seventy-seven more have sustained injuries amid the chaos.
This deluge, attributed to depression and strong southwesterly airstreams, has stretched the region's infrastructure to its limits, affecting key agricultural zones. Premier Cho Jung-tai visited the stricken city of Tainan, pledging government support and a special budget to aid recovery efforts.
Rescue operations are ongoing in the mountainous areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung County, where roads have been severed by landslides and flooding. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, despite forecasts indicating a potential easing of rain. The recent Typhoon Danas had already battered the area, intensifying the crisis.
