A tragic incident unfolded in Meghalaya as an Agriculture Department official, Teseng M Sangma, was swept away by the Ganol River's fierce currents. The mishap occurred during a family picnic in West Garo Hills district, police confirmed on Monday.
Teseng M Sangma, stationed at Ampati in South West Garo Hills, was with his family near Sella Wari when the river, swollen by overnight rain, turned hazardous. Strong currents took him away as he attempted a crossing, his family reported.
Rescue efforts involving Fire and Emergency Services, local swimmers, and volunteers began promptly. However, poor visibility hindered the Sunday search, which was halted at 7:30 pm. Operations are expected to continue given the heightened water levels across the region's rivers.
