The death toll in the recent bridge collapse over the Mahisagar river in Gujarat's Vadodara district has climbed to 22, as confirmed by local officials on Wednesday. This tragic update follows the death of Dilip Padhiyar, who succumbed to his injuries at SSG Hospital.
Dilip Padhiyar, a 34-year-old resident from Anand district, was among those affected by the catastrophic event. According to Vadodara collector Anil Dhameliya, he passed away during treatment on Tuesday night. The disaster struck when Padhiyar was returning home after a night shift, leading to multiple vehicles plunging into the river.
Despite efforts to save the victims, only a few were rescued by locals, while the rest either drowned or lost their lives during medical care. The collapsed bridge, which was a connection point between Anand and Vadodara districts, raised concerns over infrastructure safety, resulting in the suspension of four engineers over allegations of negligence.
