Monsoon Mayhem in Maharashtra: Alerts Issued for Heavy Rains
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, particularly in Amravati and Gadchiroli. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across several districts due to the Monsoon Trough’s position south of its usual path. Conditions are expected to ease after August 21.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put Maharashtra's Vidarbha region on alert, warning of significant rainfall over the coming days. An 'orange alert', signaling possible severe weather, is in effect for the districts of Amravati and Gadchiroli. Additionally, a 'yellow alert' has been issued for Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana, and Washim.
The meteorologists predict thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall over Akola, Amravati, Buldhana, and at isolated locations in Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Nagpur, and Washim. In particular, Amravati and Gadchiroli will experience heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning on August 18 and 19, respectively.
Dr. Praveen Kumar from IMD's regional center stated that this unusual weather activity is due to the Monsoon Trough being positioned south of its typical location. A low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a depression. Weather intensity will reduce from August 21.
