In response to an impending weather emergency, Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary K Vijayanand has directed the state's power utilities to brace for heavy rainfall following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD warns of heavy to extremely heavy rain, predicting more than 20 cm of precipitation within a 24-hour period across Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, and neighboring districts. The Chief Secretary urged the power utilities to ensure public safety and maintain uninterrupted supply, emphasizing the importance of quick response mechanisms in the event of damage caused by severe weather.
During a virtual meeting, Vijayanand tasked Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) with stockpiling necessary equipment to manage power outages effectively and avert electrocutions. He also called for the establishment of 24/7 control rooms and directed coordinated efforts with local authorities and disaster management teams. In preparation for the Ganesh festival, specific measures were mandated near religious marquees to ensure electrical safety.
