The Delhi Zoo is taking steps to ensure food quality as authorities plan to install air conditioning units in their storage facilities. The decision primarily targets the preservation of meat, which forms a major part of the animals' diet, ensuring it does not spoil, particularly during hot summer months.
The zoo, which procures an assortment of foods including 165 kilograms of meat daily, sources items through government-approved vendors. These vendors are selected via tenders following rigorous quality checks, explained Delhi Zoo Director Sanjeet Kumar. The variety stocked includes 1,100 kilograms of fodder, an array of vegetables, fruits, and grains.
Vending contracts are split among different suppliers, emphasizing the assurance of quality. The zoo relies on established providers like Mother Dairy to avoid subpar local supplies. Authorities aim to use new cooling systems for preserving not just meat but also other perishable food, maintaining high standards for animal nutrition.
