In a bid to enhance infrastructure safety, the Delhi Public Works Department has announced the insurance of all electrical installations at foot overbridges and pedestrian underpasses. This move aims to tackle the recurring theft of these items, along with addressing infrastructure upkeep issues.

The maintenance project, targeting northwest Delhi, hands the responsibility of theft-replacement to the contractor. With 115 foot overbridges around the city facing neglect, issues like broken lifts, dysfunctional escalators, and littering are prevalent. A company is being brought on board to conduct repairs and manage maintenance, providing continuous security and cleanliness, with all electrical components insured for a year.

Additionally, the department has faced past criticism from courts over deteriorating foot overbridges, highlighted by a tragic incident in December 2023 when a 16-year-old fell to their death due to missing protective grilles. This project, costing Rs 5.4 crore, encompasses 12 foot overbridges and six pedestrian underpasses, aiming for comprehensive improvement.
