Shifting Climate: ENSO-Neutral Now, La Niña Looms
The U.S. National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center reports ENSO-neutral conditions with average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific. ENSO-neutral is expected to continue through early fall 2025, with a transition to La Niña in late 2025. An ENSO Alert System status indicates a La Niña Watch.

The U.S. National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has announced that the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is currently in a neutral phase. Sea surface temperatures are near average across most of the tropical Pacific Ocean, indicating stable conditions.
Experts predict that ENSO-neutral conditions are likely to persist through the end of summer and into early fall 2025. However, a shift to La Niña conditions is expected by fall and early winter 2025-2026, with the chances of an El Niño developing being very small through early spring 2026.
The CPC has updated the ENSO Alert System status to a La Niña Watch. This alert is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of La Niña within the next six months, marking a significant change in climate patterns.
