The central government has approved environmental clearance for the Oju hydroelectric project in Upper Subansiri district, Arunachal Pradesh. This decision marks a significant step towards establishing one of India's largest hydropower initiatives in a geologically sensitive zone bordering China.
Developed by Oju Subansiri Hydro Power Corporation Pvt. Ltd., the project aims to produce 2,220 megawatts through a run-of-the-river scheme. It includes a 100-meter-high concrete dam, a 14.12 km tunnel, and underground power complex, costing over Rs 24,942 crore, generating 8,402 million units annually.
Despite clearance, social and environmental concerns persist. The 750-hectare project site could significantly impact local tribal communities and ecology. Residents demand fair compensation and share of electricity, amid warnings about potential risks including glacier lake outburst floods in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
