Several villagers in Palghar district expressed their strong opposition to the proposed Murbe port project during a public hearing on Monday. They cited environmental risks and criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the project's development.
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the district administration jointly organized the hearing, which took place under tight security at the district collectorate. The event drew a significant turnout, with an estimated 6,000 to 7,000 coastal villagers in attendance.
The Murbe Port project, spearheaded by JSW Infrastructure along with the Maharashtra Maritime Board, is under fire from residents who argue the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report is deeply flawed. Deepak Raut of Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed the project threatens the coastal ecosystem and local livelihoods, while local authorities assured that all objections would be recorded for further review.
