The Himachal Pradesh government has put forward a proposal for projects worth over Rs 5,400 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure. Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh highlighted the need for better allocation during a meeting chaired by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi.
Singh pointed out the limited private-sector participation in the redevelopment of hill areas due to challenging terrains and appealed for relaxed terms for financing. The Centre previously approved the Urban Challenge Fund to promote reforms in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across India, mandating a funding pattern that can strain hill states like Himachal Pradesh.
Focusing on tourism and economic growth, the state's plans include climate-resilient infrastructure and wellness centers with minimal ecological harm. Reduced financial requirements for states like Himachal have been sought to overcome funding challenges posed by the region's unique geographical and ecological constraints.
