Northern states in India endured extreme heatwave conditions on Sunday, with temperatures soaring up to 46 degrees Celsius in parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. Relief, however, is anticipated later this week from expected rains and thunderstorms due to a western disturbance.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioned residents against prolonged heat exposure, as the country's peak power demand hit a new record of 256.11 GW on Saturday, driven by the increased use of cooling appliances.

The severe heat also caused a drop in visitors at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and prompted various state governments to announce measures to combat the intense temperatures, including uninterrupted power supply to essential services and suspended classes in districts with extreme heat alerts.
