Tamil Nadu Tops India's Marine Fish Production in 2025

India's marine fish production grew by 3% in 2025, reaching 35.7 lakh tonnes, according to ICAR-CMFRI. Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading state in marine fish production, surpassing Gujarat with 6.85 lakh tonnes, while Gujarat's output declined due to adverse weather and fishing bans.

Kerala retained the third position with a marginal increase in landings to 6.24 lakh tonnes. Karnataka experienced a remarkable 44% rise in landings, while Maharashtra posted an 18% increase. The CMFRI report revealed Indian mackerel as the most landed marine resource, followed by cephalopods and oil sardine.

Kerala's marine fish landings accounted for 17% of India's total in 2025. Despite challenges from heavy rain and a cargo shipwreck, Ernakulam district led the state's production. The overall economic value of marine fish landings at the national level increased, driven by strong market demand and improved marketing efficiency.
