Goa Declares Riverbanks Ecologically Sensitive: A Move to Protect Natural Heritage

The Goa forest department has taken a significant environmental step by designating 6.27 crore square metres of land along the Mandovi and Zuari rivers as ecologically sensitive. This marks a crucial effort to protect these regions from construction and commercial activities, preserving their natural state.

According to an official from the department, this measure follows a directive from Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane issued on April 27. The initiative aims to identify and delineate vulnerable areas along the riverbanks, ensuring their protection under environmental laws.

The department has communicated the findings to the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department, urging action in accordance with the Town and Country Planning Act, thereby emphasizing the significance of maintaining ecological balance in the region.
