Reviving Rivers: Urban Transformation Along Sylhet's Waterways
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman unveiled a riverfront development project in Bangladesh's Sylhet district, focusing on flood protection and the enhancement of river banks. Part of an urban infrastructure improvement plan, this initiative aims to combat monsoon-induced flood damage. Alongside, re-excavation of the Basia River promises agricultural benefits.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman launched an ambitious riverfront development project along the Surma River in Sylhet district, as reported by the state-owned news agency, BSS.
The project is poised to build flood protection structures and improve the river banks with aesthetic enhancements. It's a strategic component of the government's broader agenda aimed at fortifying urban infrastructure in river-congested areas to minimize flood impact, especially during monsoons in the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta.
During his inaugural visit as Prime Minister to Sylhet, Rahman also started the re-excavation of the Basia River. The initiative aims to boost irrigation for agriculture and prevent floods and waterlogging, aiding thousands previously forced into shelters during flash floods.
