NASA Unveils Plans for Expansive Lunar Base

NASA has initiated plans for a large-scale moon base by contracting U.S. companies for key components. Blue Origin will provide landers, while Firefly Aerospace will deliver drones. The initiative aligns with future Artemis missions, aiming to establish a permanent lunar presence by the 2030s.

NASA has commenced efforts to establish an expansive lunar base, involving American companies to supply vital equipment for the project. As described in the initial phase, the space agency has awarded contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars to four U.S. enterprises, reflecting its commitment to a lasting presence on the moon.

Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, will supply dual landers to transport lunar terrain vehicles produced by Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to the moon's surface, near its south pole. Firefly Aerospace, notable for its successful lunar landing last year, will contribute by delivering drones. All these components are slated to precede the Artemis astronauts' expected landings on the moon by 2028.

The Artemis program's recent missions, including a profound lunar flyaround, showcase NASA's progress. The upcoming Artemis III in 2027 plans for astronauts to dock NASA's Orion capsule with lunar landers being developed. By 2028, the moon base's second phase will introduce permanent infrastructure, spanning a decade of development.

Carlos Garcia-Galan, executive of NASA's moon base program, envisions the base stretching over hundreds of square miles, safeguarded by drones termed MoonFall. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized international cooperation concerning nearby spacecraft. The moon base aims to stimulate lunar commerce, conduct research, and pave the way for Mars exploration.
