Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen fell to an unexpected first-round exit at Wimbledon on Tuesday, courtesy of Czech contender Katerina Siniakova. Siniakova, known for her expertise on grass courts and as a three-time doubles champion at the All England Club, claimed the victory with sets of 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
Siniakova leveraged her grasscourt prowess to outmaneuver the fifth-seeded Zheng, who had been predicted to make a strong showing at the tournament. Although Zheng managed to rally and win the second set, she couldn't maintain the momentum and succumbed to her third consecutive early exit from Wimbledon.
In advancing to the second round, Siniakova will meet Japan's four-time major champion Naomi Osaka. Meanwhile, another notable upset came as third seed Jessica Pegula of the United States was convincingly defeated by Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto, with straight sets of 6-2, 6-3.
