In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the Special Olympics Bharat boys' football team successfully defended their title at the prestigious Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. Celebrating their hard-fought 3-1 victory over Poland, Union Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse hailed the team's unyielding spirit and exceptional performance.
Star player Saheer Muhammed emerged as the tournament's highest goal-scorer for India with an impressive seven goals. His teammates Ankush Kumar and Stalin Kumar added to the tally, scoring three and two goals respectively, with Tarun Kumar and Biki Duley each contributing a goal. The team's triumph is supported by the Sports Ministry and the leadership of Mallika Nadda.
The Gothia Cup, known as the world's largest international youth football tournament, included over 1900 teams from 70 countries this year. The Special Olympics Trophy category, started in 2011, highlights the transformative power of sports, fostering an environment of empowerment, inclusion, and leadership for athletes with varying cognitive abilities.
