In a resounding tribute to India's inclusive sporting spirit, Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, felicitated the victorious Special Olympics Bharat football team at a grand ceremony in New Delhi. The celebration marked their exceptional triumph at the Gothia Special Olympics Trophy 2025 held in Gothenburg, Sweden, where the Indian team successfully defended their title, emerging as back-to-back champions in one of the world’s most prestigious youth football tournaments.

The victory at the Gothia Cup is a watershed moment, not only for the team but for India’s growing global stature in inclusive sports. It exemplifies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat—a developed India driven by equality, opportunity, and empowerment across all segments of society.

Gothia Cup 2025: A Global Platform for Exceptional Talent

Known internationally as the "World Youth Cup," the Gothia Cup is the largest global youth football tournament. Since 2011, its Special Olympics category has become a vital platform for showcasing the talents of athletes with diverse cognitive abilities. Competing against teams from across the globe, the Special Olympics Bharat team stood tall, displaying remarkable grit, teamwork, and finesse.

The Indian squad clinched a 3-1 victory against Poland in the final, following their 4-3 championship win over Denmark in 2024. With this win, India has firmly cemented its position as a leader in inclusive sports on the global stage. The team’s preparation included an intensive training camp hosted at Manav Rachna University from July 2 to July 11, fully supported by the Ministry under the Annual Calendar for Training and Competitions (ACTC), which sponsored the participation of 17 members (10 players and 7 support staff).

Minister’s Address: Inclusion as a National Strength

During the felicitation ceremony, Smt. Raksha Khadse offered heartfelt congratulations to the players, coaches, and support staff. She praised their performance as a reflection of the transformative power of sports in enabling health, leadership, dignity, and unity. The Minister noted how the victory is in alignment with Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, a flagship policy initiative focused on nurturing grassroots sports talent, with an emphasis on inclusive development across all demographics.

“These victories are not just about goals scored on the field. They represent goals scored for equality, for hope, and for the spirit of Viksit Bharat,” she said.

Smt. Khadse highlighted the achievements of individual players, lauding Saheer Muhammed, who scored 7 goals, along with Ankush Kumar (3 goals), Stalin Kumar (2 goals), and contributions from Tarun Kumar and Biki Duley, as stellar examples of the hidden talent thriving in India’s inclusive sports ecosystem.

Celebrating a Collaborative Ecosystem

The Minister also acknowledged the crucial role of institutional and corporate partnerships in nurturing these champions. She credited the success of Special Olympics Bharat to the visionary leadership of Dr. Mallika Nadda, President of Special Olympics Bharat, and corporate partners such as SKF, who have invested in building long-term capabilities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

“The Gothia Cup triumph is not just theirs—it is ours. It represents a victory made possible through collaboration between government, sports federations, corporate sponsors, and civil society,” said Smt. Khadse.
