Cheers to Change: Alcohol in Women's Super League Stands
Alcohol, banned at men's games since 1985, will be trialed at seven Women's Super League clubs for the 2025-26 season. The family-friendly nature of women's football paves the way for this trial, which follows a successful pilot and increasing food and drink sales at games.

For the first time since 1985, alcohol will be allowed in select Women's Super League stands during the 2025-26 season in England. This trial decision highlights the distinct family-friendly atmosphere of women's football compared to men's, where alcohol was banned to curb past hooliganism.
The Women's Super League disclosed on Thursday that fans of top-tier clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, London City Lionesses, Manchester City, and Manchester United can legally consume alcohol at games. The ongoing trial, not restricted by the 1985 legislation affecting men's football, shows promise.
Feedback from the initial test phase involving 51,000 fans at 19 fixtures indicated overwhelming support, with two-thirds in favor and 84% rating their safety highly. No adverse behavior changes were reported by officials, and there was an increase in stadium expenditures, further indicating the positive impact of in-seat drinking on the women's game experience.
