Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain and esteemed Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen have been selected for the 20-member Indian team set to compete in the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool, England. Scheduled for September 4 to 14, the championships represent the first of its kind organized by the newly established World Boxing, the sport's international governing body.
The selection, following a rigorous evaluation at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, marks a vital return for Borgohain and Zareen to the national stage since the Paris 2024 Olympics. The two boxers, both previous World Champions under a different governing body, missed participating in earlier international events but excelled in the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad.
While Zareen will fight in the 51 kg class and Borgohain in the 75 kg division, familiar faces such as Narender Berwal, Hitesh Gulia, and Abhinash Jamwal, who have excelled in recent competitions, also join the lineup. The championship will see participation from global contenders across 20 weight classes, and India hopes for a strong performance following a hiatus in previous international tournaments.
