In an unexpected turn of events at the world championships in Singapore, Australian swimmer Sam Short has withdrawn from the men's 800 metres freestyle final. He was advised to do so on medical grounds after suffering from food poisoning.
Short, who had impressed in the qualifying heats, shared the news on Instagram, expressing his disappointment over the decision. "I got ill very fast, which we believe is food poisoning from my hotel lunch," Short explained. Despite signs of improvement, his condition didn't allow him to compete.
Having qualified with an impressive time, Short's absence is notable among a competitive field. He remains hopeful of recovering in time to support his teammates in the 4x200m relay scheduled for Friday.
