Food Poisoning Forces Sam Short Out of World Championships 800m Final
Australian swimmer Sam Short pulls out of the world championships 800m freestyle final in Singapore due to food poisoning. The 21-year-old was among the top medal contenders. He hopes to recover in time for the 4x200m relay. Fellow Australian Benjamin Goedemans replaces him in the final.

Australian swimmer Sam Short has withdrawn from the men's 800 metres freestyle final at the world championships in Singapore under medical advice due to food poisoning.
The 21-year-old was a strong contender for a medal in a tough field featuring Ireland's Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen and Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi. Describing the decision as "extremely emotional," Short shared that his illness quickly worsened, likely due to a contaminated hotel meal.
Despite an impressive qualifying heat where he secured the second-fastest time, Short's condition deteriorated, resulting in vomiting and severe discomfort. Although intent on recovering to assist his team in the 4x200m relay, he conceded to being replaced by compatriot Benjamin Goedemans in the final. American swimmers have also faced challenges, as a gastroenteritis outbreak hampered several athletes' performances at the event.
