In a significant judgment, the Supreme Court has annulled the lifetime ban placed on former Ranji Trophy player Santhosh Karunakaran. The ban was initially imposed by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) following a blacklisting order in 2021.
A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta discarded the earlier decision of the Kerala High Court, which had dismissed Karunakaran's appeal against the KCA's decision. The apex court found the High Court's judgment excessively harsh, noting discrepancies in the proceedings that suggested a lack of transparency.
Karunakaran, who had sought the establishment of model byelaws for district cricket associations, argued that the procedural failings during ombudsman hearings impaired his defense. The Supreme Court's judgment signals a fresh opportunity for Karunakaran to present his case fairly.
