Khalid Jamil, the celebrated coach who led Aizawl FC to an unexpected I-League victory in 2017, has been appointed head coach of the Indian national men's football team. This appointment marks the first time an Indian has held this prestigious role in 13 years.

The decision was made by the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) executive committee, selecting Jamil from a three-man shortlist that included former India head coach Stephen Constantine and ex-Slovakia manager Stefan Tarkovic. The selection process was overseen by the AIFF's Technical Committee, under the guidance of legendary striker IM Vijayan.

Jamil, currently leading Jamshedpur FC, steps into the shoes of Spaniard Manolo Marquez, who departed last month amid the team's recent difficulties. Jamil is set to embark on his first challenge at the helm with the upcoming Central Asian Football Association (CAFA) Nations Cup, taking place in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan from August 29.
