Kolesnikov Leads Russian Swimming Triumph as Neutrals

Kliment Kolesnikov's spectacular performance clinched gold in the men's 50m backstroke, accompanied by a team victory in the men's 4x100 medley relay. This feat marks a significant achievement for Russian athletes competing under neutral status at the swimming world championships in Singapore.

Previously banned due to geopolitical tensions linked to the Ukraine invasion, Russian athletes are enthusiastically re-entering international arenas. Kolesnikov, who holds the world record in the 50 backstroke, competed in his first global event since the 2019 championships. Evgenii Somov, now based in California, was the sole Russian swimmer participating neutrally in last year's Olympics.

Russia's athletic prowess at the championships showcased their potential ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, as highlighted by swimmer Andrei Minakov. Despite narrowly missing a world record, the team expressed optimism, with Dmitry Mazepin of the Russian Aquatic Sports Federation hoping this momentum would eventually lift the 'neutral' status of Russian sportspeople.
