The much-anticipated Pro Govinda League (PGL) 2025 is set to make a grand return from August 7-9 at the Dome SVP Stadium in Worli, Mumbai. This annual event, deeply rooted in Mumbai's dahi handi tradition, is poised to become a sporting spectacle according to a recent PGL announcement. Jashan Bhumkar, a prominent entrepreneur in the speciality chemicals and pharma sectors and a renowned Hindustani classical musician, joins the league as the co-owner of the Alibaug Knights, alongside the notable hospitality executive Ranjeet Bindra, known for the famous Bastian group of restaurants.
Expressing his excitement, Bhumkar stated, "The Pro Govinda League is more than a sport; it's a celebration of courage, teamwork, and the vibrant cultural essence of Maharashtra. Being someone who cherishes Indian traditions and music, this opportunity to support a grassroots sport resonated deeply with me." He is confident in the Alibaug Knights, who represent the spirited Bal Utsahi Pathak from Jogeshwari. "From the moment I met this team, I sensed a unique energy – they are not just athletes but fighters who light up their surroundings. My faith in them is unwavering," he remarked.
The tournament will feature an intense competition among 16 elite Govinda pathaks, all vying for victory. Live performances by Padmashri Kailash Kher on the opening day and Salim-Sulaiman during the finals will enhance the festive ambiance. Bhumkar added, "This league seamlessly integrates tradition, excitement, and entertainment. Our aim is to elevate Govinda into a professionally recognized sport while honoring its cultural roots. It's a privilege to be part of this journey."
