In the fourth minute, Liverpool gained an early advantage through a strike from Hugo Ekitike. Crystal Palace, however, quickly responded with a penalty conversion by Jean-Philippe Mateta. Jeremie Frimpong restored Liverpool's lead in the 21st minute, making it 2-1 at half-time. The Reds shone offensively but were defensively vulnerable, with Virgil Van Dijk conceding a penalty to Palace.

Palace equalized through Ismaila Sarr in the 77th minute, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout. Palace won 3-2, with Justin Devenny's decisive kick. Liverpool manager Arne Slot commented on the team's recent changes and adjustments needed, acknowledging that although they limited open play chances, penalties played a crucial role in the defeat.
