Preparations for the World Para Athletics Championships in India are on track, according to Paralympic Committee of India President Devendra Jhajharia. With Mondo track installations nearing completion, the event, scheduled for September 27 to October 5 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, is poised to be a significant para sports milestone for the country.
The championship is set to witness the highest number of participating countries in its history, with confirmations from 107 nations, including powerhouse para-athletics countries like China, Brazil, and Great Britain. The Delhi edition will also feature India's largest contingent, expected to consist of around 100 athletes, offering a robust showcase for India's para-athletic prowess.
Organizers have emphasized a para-friendly environment, contracting 100 para-friendly buses and ensuring ample wheelchair accommodation at the venue. A request has been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the event, underscoring the government's strong backing for para sports. Expectations are high, with the Indian team aiming to exceed its 17-medal haul at the last World Championships.
