Indian football's iconic striker Sunil Chhetri has been omitted from the list of 35 probables announced by the newly-appointed head coach, Khalid Jamil, for the CAFA Nations Cup in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The reasons behind Chhetri's exclusion are not clear. While his recent performances have not indicated a decline, it remains uncertain whether Chhetri himself chose not to participate, or if his Indian Super League team, Bengaluru FC's current situation, involving a suspension of player salaries amidst ISL's uncertain future, influenced the decision.
Coach Jamil's squad, however, includes other players from Bengaluru FC, alongside discussions with AIFF officials who have deferred comments on the matter, indicating the issue should be addressed with the head coach. The selected players will start their training amidst ongoing domestic league commitments.
