The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a major stride in prioritizing player safety by instituting a substitute rule for serious injuries in domestic cricket.

Starting with the Duleep Trophy on August 28, 2025, this regulation allows for a like-for-like replacement in the event of an injury deemed serious enough to prevent continued participation, provided a match referee approves after reviewing a submitted medical report.

The rule will also extend to the Ranji Trophy, according to ESPNcricinfo. Crucially, it only covers injuries sustained during the match and external injuries like fractures or deep cuts. The policy marks the beginning of India's domestic cricket acting as a testing ground for potential global adaptation.
