In a surprising move, Jacob Bethell has been named England's interim captain for the T20 series against Ireland, a decision that has sparked criticism from former cricketer Mark Butcher. Butcher questioned the logic behind Bethell's elevation, suggesting it reflects a lack of respect towards the Irish side. England will head to Dublin, with the series beginning on September 17.

Bethell, who becomes England's youngest international captain at 21, takes over from Harry Brook, who is resting ahead of the Ashes. Butcher expressed disbelief at the selection, given Bethell's limited appearances this season. "It's difficult to explain to anyone following England's cricket," Butcher remarked on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, reacting to Bethell's promotion amid a scarce summer of cricket.

Despite Bethell's impressive debut in New Zealand and notable performances, Butcher remains unconvinced about the necessity of Bethell leading against Ireland. Highlighting key omissions like Jordan Cox and Liam Livingstone, Butcher criticized the selection, calling it disrespectful to Ireland. He implied the series is treated as insignificant, overshadowed by upcoming critical matches like the Ashes. (ANI)
