The Indian government has enacted a new sports policy allowing its athletes to compete in international events that include Pakistan. However, the stance against participating in competitions held in Pakistan or engaging in bilateral events remains unchanged. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confirmed the policy revision on Thursday.
This decision emerges amidst tensions over the upcoming Asia Cup cricket match between India and Pakistan. The ongoing tensions stem from a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly by Pakistan-backed militants, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists, prompting India's retaliatory Operation Sindoor.
The Ministry emphasized India's policy of not engaging in bilateral sports events with Pakistan. At international or multilateral events, decisions will align with international sports bodies' practices and India's interests. The ministry also aims to boost India's appeal as a venue for international sports by simplifying visa processes for stakeholders.
